A new LDA-based face recognition system which can solve the small sample size problem

چکیده
A new LDA-based face recognition system is presented in this paper. Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) is one of the most popular linear projection techniques for feature extraction. The major drawback of applying LDA is that it may encounter the small sample size problem. In this paper, we propose a new LDA-based technique which can solve the small sample size problem. We also prove that the most expressive vectors derived in the null space of the within-class scatter matrix using principal component analysis (PCA) are equal to the optimal discriminant vectors derived in the original space using LDA. The experimental results show that the new LDA process improves the performance of a face recognition system signi"cantly. ( 2000 Pattern Recognition Society. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. Solving the Small Sample Size Problem of LDA
The small sample size problem is often encountered in pattern recognition. It results in the singularity of the within-class scatter matrix Sw in Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA). Different methods have been proposed to solve this problem in face recognition literature. Some methods reduce the dimension of the original sample space and hence unavoidably remove the null space of Sw, which has ...
متن کاملNormalized Direct Linear Discriminant Analysis with its Application to Face Recognition
The dimensionality of sample is often larger than the number of training samples for highdimensional pattern recognition such as face recognition. Here linear discriminant analysis (LDA) cannot be performed directly because of the singularity of the within-class scatter matrix. This is socalled “small sample size” (SSS) problem. PCA plus LDA (FDA) and Direct LDA (DLDA) are two popular methods t...
متن کاملFace Recognition Using Novel LDA-Based Algorithms
Facial feature extraction with enhanced discriminatory power plays an important role in face recognition (FR) applications. Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) is a powerful tool used for dimensionality reduction and feature extraction in FR tasks. However, the classification performance of traditional LDA is often degraded, due to two factors: 1) their classification accuracies suffer from the ...

Illumination variation is a challenging problem in face recognition research area. Same person can appear greatly different under varying lighting conditions. This paper consists of Face Recognition System which is invariant to illumination variations. Face recognition system which uses Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) as feature extractor have Small Sample Size (SSS). It consists of implemen...
متن کاملSubspace LDA Methods for Solving the Small Sample Size Problem in Face Recognition
In face recognition, LDA often encounters the so-called small sample size (SSS) problem, also known as curse of dimensionality. This problem occurs when the dimensionality of the data is quite large in comparison to the number of available training images. One of the approaches for handling this situation is the subspace LDA. It is a two-stage framework: it first uses PCA-based method for dimen...
